Abstract:

Contains files of course materials, lecture notes, correspondence, syllabi of seminars, class readers, research materials, small architectural drawings, etc. related to Paul Groth's career as a professor of architecture and geography at UC Berkeley, with a particular emphasis on cultural landscape studies. Includes three folders of photographs labeled with the title of Groth's published book, "Living Downtown", a history of residential hotels in the United States. The photographs correspond to the subject of his book. Also contains materials related to an Oakland guide book/walking tour, including notes by J.B. Jackson, and two readers for classes Groth taught in geography, environmental studies, and American studies.

Paul Groth (1949-) is Professor Emeritus of Architecture and Geography at the University of California, Berkeley. Groth's overarching research interest is in cultural landscape studies--that is, the history, form, and meaning of ordinary built environments, particularly in the United States, and the ways in which social groups have used space (as buildings, rooms, street grids, fields, or yards) to articulate social relations and to derive cultural meaning.
